Warnes Westbury Wipeout win leads the way for North Somerset AC

DAVID Warnes raced to an emphatic victory in a highly successful Westbury Wipeout multi-terrain races through Blaise Castle.

The 12-year-old, from North Somerset AC, completed the course in 13mins 34secs to finish 19 seconds clear of the 106 strong field. Top girl was Alice Davies.

In the under-10s race the Westbury Harriers' pair of Alex Grocott and Rosie Hamilton-Jones were the respective winners. With 146 finishers the event was close to a sell-out.

The Towpath mob match is staged from Greville Smyth Park on Friday with Bristol & West AC defending their title. Last week's race, in which parts of the course were flooded, was won by Pete Woodward, of Bristol & West, in a time of 34mins 48secs with clubmate Annabel Granger top woman in 37:42 from Charlotte Green.

With effect from last night head of young athletes coaching Dean Garrett will be running a Junior Academy session at Whitehall Athletics Arena on a Mondays from 6-7pm in addition to the existing Wednesday night Junior Academy session between 6.15-7.15pm.

The next Bridge Inn 5k road race in Shortwood will be held on Tuesday, July 31 (ww.bristolandwest.org.uk). Races in Avon next month include the following: Friday 3rd Towpath 10k (www.greatwesternrunners.org.uk); Monday 6th Blaise Blazer 6k (www.westburyharriers.co.uk); Wednesday 8th Bitton 5k road (www.bittonroadrunners.co.uk) and the Towpath 10k multi terrain race.

On a sodden evening, Michael Johnson won the Sunday's Hill 10k road race in 34:23. Debbie Niccol finished third (4:28.23) in the 1500m at the BMC Gold Standard meeting at Watford.

The final race in the Town & County Harriers multi terrain series, 'The Dundry Thunder Run', takes place on August 2. Further details www.tach.org.uk.
